San Diego, California

San Diego, California

Often seen as the poor relation to San Francisco and Los Angeles, this southern Californian city on the border with Mexico has much going for it. I spent New Year 2013 here but it was a return journey for me having last visited the city in 1989 with my father.

This time I didn’t play golf or visit Shamu in Seaworld, I wanted to explore the surrounding area. In the short time I was there I visited Point Lomas to the south, Torrey Pines in the north and all points in between.

Point Lomas is definitely worth a visit. Those of you who know me well will realize that I have a soft spot for photographing lighthouses. Old Point Lomas lighthouse doesn’t disappoint with its pure white buildings and picket fence. In addition there is the Cabrillo National Monument celebrating Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot on the west coast of the USA in 1542.

There is also a strong military presence on Point Lomas. Coastal artillery batteries were placed here to protect San Diego harbour from enemy warships. There is also a military cemetery which offers wide views of San Diego below. I made a few images here as I loved the symmetry of the stones and the light was very special that evening.

Being a golfer, I couldn’t resist photographing Torrey Pines Golf Club, the scene of many US golf professional tournaments including the US Open in 2008. Tiger Woods seems to be able to master this course quite well. Perched on the Pacific coast it must be a delight to play – maybe I’ll give it a try on my next visit.

In the city itself you’ll find the Gaslamp quarter which is full of bars and restaurants, the aircraft carrier USS Midway and a superb aerospace museum. I would really recommend you visit this city if you find yourself in Southern California. It has a more homely feel than its larger neighbours to the north and the weather is usually superb.

Project 2013 – 365 Random Acts of Kindness

Hello World! I’m pleased to launch my travel blog today.

My plan is to write a monthly blog highlighting one aspect of my travels, sharing images I’ve made. I hope everyone who decides to follow me will not only learn something new about the world but be inspired by my images.

However, my first entry is not directly about travel. I was reading an article in the Sunday Times last December about a lady who was trying to do something charitable at least once a day. As part of her project she established the Jam Jar charity. People were asked to fill the jars with coins and donate the contents to her charity. She was overwhelmed by the response.

This made me think about what I could do. I therefore decided to create my own plan called “Project 2013”. I have set myself the task of doing at least one random act of kindness each day of this year.

My first travel blog will be about my visit to San Diego, California over the New Year.

I look forward to your suggestions and comments.
